Good Afternoon, Peirce Caregivers:
We hope everyone is having a good April break. Congratulations to all of our Peirce community members who ran in the Boston Marathon on Monday!
We write with an update on the City/NPS budget process. Tuesday (April 22), Mayor Ruthanne Fuller presented her proposed budget to the City Council. Despite the School Committee’s previous approval of the “Level Services +” budget prepared by Superintendent Anna Nolin, the Mayor’s budget aligns with the “Cuts” budget described in the PTO Toolkit that we circulated on March 25. For most who have been following the budget negotiations, the Mayor’s allocation is not surprising, but for many will feel disappointing. Here are a few links to city budget websites and Fig City News reporting on the Mayor’s Budget Presentation.

Later in the budgeting season, the City Council will vote on the Mayor’s proposed budget. The City Council has the power to reduce allocations or strike line items in their entirety, but cannot add to the budget (in its entirety or to any specific line item). In 2022 the City Council rejected the Mayor’s proposed 2023 budget in its entirety because of a disagreement about the allocation to NPS. That vote was symbolic only, however, because the budget took effect on July 1 anyway.
If you are interested in vocalizing your perspective to city officials, caregivers can still write or call the School Committee, the City Council (including Mark Laredo, who is currently running for mayor), and Mayor Fuller. This website has contact information for all City Councilors. The full City Council can be reached by emailing [email protected].
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly. We will continue to send updates if there are major developments regarding the NPS budget, and in the meantime look forward to a busy May and June with many Peirce community building activities!
Best,
Abby Blake & Erica Chamberlain
