NPS Budget Discussion – Upcoming Events

Dear Peirce Caregivers,

We are at a critical juncture for next year’s NPS budget.  As you know, Mayor Fuller proposed an allocation to NPS that would result in $3.7 million in cuts; this allocation would not allow NPS to maintain its current level of services. If the School Committee passes a budget based on this allocation (the red “Cuts” budget), NPS will be forced to start laying off staff June 30 and actualizing the budget the School Committee passes.

If additional funds become available later in the fiscal year—as they have every year for the past 10 years–these laid-off staff will not be rehired and it is unlikely the NPS operating budget will see any of these additional funds.

Therefore, we believe it is imperative that the School Committee vote in favor of the Superintendent’s budget, which provides the funds our schools need and deserve. Given the chronic under-forecasting of the City’s revenues and the fact that there have been millions in free cash available every June for the past 10 years, it would be irresponsible to pass the Mayor’s allocated budget and lay off dozens of staff only to find money is available later to fund these positions.

The embedded flyer provides a brief background on the budget crisis, as well as the best parties to contact to express your concerns.
