School Committee Update on Superintendent Search (from 4/12/22)

Dear NPS Families,

We would like to congratulate Superintendent David Fleishman on his new position as President/Chief Executive Officer of JVS Boston. David has led the Newton Public Schools for 12 years through many challenges and successes for NPS. The numerous accomplishments and initiatives David has overseen in his tenure, have helped to cement Newton’s status as a leader among peers. We are incredibly thankful for his dedicated service and are especially thankful that he has attracted, hired, and trained such a strong team of administrators and principals. Therefore, he has left the district well prepared for this next step. Thank you and good luck, David!

To ensure a smooth transition after David’s departure, the School Committee will spend the next several months identifying and selecting an interim superintendent for the 2022-23 school year. School Committee Chair, Tamika Olszewski, will appoint a small working group to identify prospective interim superintendent candidates and recommend finalists to the School Committee for interview. There will be a variety of opportunities for community feedback after finalist selections and prior to a vote on the interim appointment. Conservatively, we expect that the interim superintendent will be hired for at least one year, giving us sufficient time for the much more comprehensive process of finding the district’s next superintendent.

The superintendent search process will likely overlap during the later phases of the interim search process. We will provide additional details once they become available. We are excited to begin this journey to find the next superintendent of the Newton Public Schools and will keep you informed every step of the way.

Sincerely,

The Newton School Committee
