Superintendent Search Process Update from Newton School Committee – 5/10

May 10, 2022

Dear NPS Community,

We would like to share an important update on the superintendent search process from last night’s School Committee Meeting. You can watch the full meeting on NewTV (https://newtv.org/) and find materials for the meeting on the School Committee website at https://www.newton.k12.ma.us/schoolcommittee

We know that selecting an interim and ultimately a new superintendent is top of mind for all stakeholders. School Committee Chair, Tamika Olszewski, shared an overview of that plan last night. The Interim Superintendent search committee has created a job posting which has been posted since May 6th and they have been actively recruiting potential candidates, a process which is ongoing. That committee will review applicants and select finalists. Once finalists are identified, the School Committee will interview the finalists in executive session followed by a vote in a public session. We plan to have an interim in place before the start of the 2022-23 school year.

Details were also shared about the search for the permanent Superintendent. This process will start over the summer with the selection of a consultant to assist with the search. In the fall the selected consultant will assist with the creation of a search committee that represents all stakeholder groups in the community, from NPS administrators and staff to parents and students. The larger community will be engaged in determining what is needed in this role through surveys, focus groups, and other forms of engagement. The goal is to post the job in December 2022 and select a superintendent by the spring 2023.

For full details on both processes, please refer to the materials presented at the meeting last night. There is now a page on the School Committee website that contains all information about the Superintendent search. You can find this at https://www.newton.k12.ma.us/superintendentsearch. We look forward to working with you on this process.

Sincerely,

The Newton School Committee
